Handcrafted furniture, traditional cabinet making and bespoke commissions since 1983.
At Butterfly Furniture, we create individually commissioned, handmade furniture in Yorkshire, combining traditional cabinet-making skills with thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship.
Based near York, our family-run workshop specialises in bespoke wooden furniture, from freestanding dining tables, cabinets and dressers to fitted furniture, handcrafted kitchens and individual commissions.
Every piece is made to reflect your personal style, practical requirements and the character of your home. Whether you have a detailed design or an idea you would like to explore, our experienced furniture makers can help bring it to life.
Butterfly Furniture was established in 1983 by Andrew Conning, following a five-year apprenticeship at Acorn Industries in Bransby, North Yorkshire. His training in the North Yorkshire furniture tradition established the foundations of a business dedicated to skilled woodworking and individually handcrafted furniture.
Today, Andrew works alongside his son Ben, continuing the family tradition of furniture making. Combining established cabinet-making techniques with modern workshop methods, we produce bespoke furniture that balances traditional craftsmanship, practical design and lasting quality.
As experienced cabinet makers in York, we take pride in creating furniture with character and individuality. From selecting suitable timber to considering proportions, construction and finishing details, each commission receives the attention it deserves.
Our work includes traditional and contemporary furniture, carefully designed to complement both period properties and modern homes throughout York, Harrogate and North Yorkshire.

Our handmade bedroom furniture combines practical storage with traditional cabinet-making skills. Freestanding furniture offers the opportunity to commission something individual, designed specifically for your home rather than selected from a standard furniture collection.
At Butterfly Furniture, we handcraft bespoke wooden furniture in a range of traditional and contemporary styles. Our work includes dining tables, cabinets, dressers, bookcases, display units and other standalone pieces.
Whether you have a particular timber in mind, need furniture made to specific dimensions or want to complement an existing piece, we can discuss the possibilities and develop a suitable design.
Our approach to traditional furniture making allows us to consider the details that give a piece its character, from timber selection and proportions to joinery, decorative features and the final finish.
The result is handcrafted furniture designed for its intended setting, with an emphasis on individuality, functionality and longevity.

The quality of handmade wooden furniture depends on more than its appearance. Timber selection, construction techniques, accurate joinery and finishing all contribute to how a piece looks, functions and performs over time.
At Butterfly Furniture, our approach combines traditional cabinet making with modern workshop methods. We carefully consider the characteristics of the timber, the purpose of the furniture and the details required to achieve the agreed design.
Our bespoke commissions can incorporate solid wood, traditional woodworking details and carefully selected finishes, depending on the requirements of the project.
From handcrafted cabinets and furniture doors to shelving, drawers and larger freestanding pieces, we focus on achieving a balance between appearance, strength and everyday practicality.
We believe furniture should be made with care, rather than simply produced to meet a standard specification. This commitment to specialist woodworking has remained central to Butterfly Furniture since its establishment.
Commissioning bespoke furniture is a personal decision. It involves choosing a furniture maker who understands your requirements, appreciates quality materials and has the practical experience to create something individual.
At Butterfly Furniture, we offer a personal approach supported by decades of traditional woodworking experience.
