Here at Butterfly Furniture, we create bespoke handmade furniture for customers throughout Harrogate and the surrounding areas. Every piece is designed around you, your home and the way you intend to use it. From individual cabinets and dining tables to complete kitchens and fitted wardrobes, we turn your ideas into furniture that provides the perfect balance of beauty and functionality.
Founded in 1983, Butterfly Furniture combines traditional North Yorkshire furniture-making techniques with modern production methods. Our bespoke furniture is handcrafted from carefully selected, high-quality materials in our on-site workshop. Whether you have a clear design in mind or need practical advice to help you get started, we will guide you through the entire process.
Harrogate features a varied mix of period properties, traditional family homes and modern developments. This can influence furniture design requirements, especially in rooms with unusual dimensions, sloping ceilings, alcoves, or original architectural features.
Custom-made furniture provides a perfect fit because it is designed for a specific room rather than produced in standard sizes. We can create built-in and freestanding furniture to complement your property, make better use of awkward areas and reflect your preferred colour, shape, material and finish.
Our Harrogate customers commission many different types of furniture, including:
Dining tables, chairs and benches
Cabinets for books, media equipment or glassware
Fitted and freestanding wardrobes
Shelving and alcove storage
Bedroom furniture
Desks and home-office furniture
Bespoke kitchens
Individual statement pieces
No project is considered too large or too small. From a twelve-seater dining suite to a modest side table, every item receives the same care and attention.
The design process starts with a consultation to understand your needs, available space and ideas. Your initial brief can take many forms. You might bring us a photograph from a magazine, a sketch or simply an idea you have in your head. At Butterfly Furniture, we can help you develop it using our experience and examples of furniture we have created previously.
We take the dimensions and layout of your room into account before discussing materials, storage, finishes, handles, knobs and other details. Following the initial brief, we prepare an estimate of costs. Once this has been accepted, detailed plans and a full quotation are created before we move into manufacturing.
Every project is managed in-house, from the initial design through to construction and installation. Your furniture is handcrafted in our purpose-built, temperature-controlled workshop, where we combine traditional techniques with modern tools. Installation is then completed by our experienced team, providing a neat, seamless fit in your Harrogate home.
Depending on the size and complexity of the project, bespoke furniture typically takes between three and twelve weeks to complete. We will explain what you can expect before work begins and keep you informed throughout.

A handmade dining table can become the centre of a room and provide a lasting place for everyday meals, family celebrations and entertaining guests. We design bespoke dining tables for homes across Harrogate, with the dimensions, wood, shape and finish chosen to suit your space.
Matching chairs or benches can also be created to provide a consistent look. Whether you prefer the warmth of oak, the rich colour of walnut or the character of reclaimed timber, we can help you find the right option. A table made specifically for your room will complement its proportions rather than dominate the space or leave it feeling empty.
Bespoke wardrobes are particularly useful in Harrogate homes with chimney breasts, sloping ceilings, alcoves or limited floor space. By designing around the precise room layout, we can turn difficult-to-furnish areas into practical, attractive storage.
Sliding wardrobes save space by using smooth-gliding doors that do not open into the room. In-frame wardrobes feature doors fitted within a solid outer frame, creating a premium and traditional appearance. Shaker wardrobes combine clean lines with timeless craftsmanship and can work equally well in classic and contemporary interiors.
The internal layout can also be tailored around what you need to store, including hanging rails, drawers, shelving and shoe storage. Bespoke cabinetry follows the same principle, making full use of the available space while fitting naturally into the room.
Material selection is a crucial part of bespoke furniture design. We create furniture using solid wood, with options including oak, walnut and reclaimed timber. Each material offers a different grain, colour and character, so we will provide honest advice based on your design, budget and intended use.
A solid understanding of sustainability is important when creating furniture intended to last. We personally select our timber before acclimatising it in our workshop. This careful preparation helps us maintain quality throughout manufacturing, assembly and finishing.
