How to Take Care of Wood Furniture

How to Take Care of Wood Furniture

Aftercare of Your Wood

When you choose to have bespoke furniture, the aftercare is just as important as the finished piece of furniture. Your new kitchen or dining table will look amazing, but the way in which you care for it afterwards will reflect on how long the furniture stays to such a good standard. In short, the better you care for your furniture the longer it will last. Just like with a car, if you care for it properly, clean it and have it regularly serviced, in theory it will last you longer than a car you don’t take any pride in.

5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Wood Furniture

All in all, the best, and the only way to take care of your wood furniture is to keep it just as pristine as the first day you brought it home. That said, here are our top five tips on how to take care of wood furniture.

  1. Dust often
  2. Avoid chemical cleaning products
  3. Re-oil or re-wax as needed (depending on the finish)
  4. Keep your wood clean, removing any stains or dirt when it first occurs
  5. Don’t mistreat your furniture, use coasters and avoid heat damage with protective mats

Taking care of your wooden furniture will become much easier the more you keep on top of it. Put it into your cleaning routine to give your furniture its desired spruce up and this way you will not only keep your furniture looking brand new but it will help to ensure that it lasts longer too.

How to Clean Wood

As previously mentioned, avoiding chemical cleaning products is key. Some may be too strong and can discolour the furniture and others simply won’t give it the treatment it deserves. Before applying any cleaning products, make sure you read the label to ensure it is wood safe, and always do a patch test on a small area that is out of sight.

Not only are the products you choose important to the finish it gives but the materials you use to apply them are. Hence why we would always suggest any of the following: feather dusters, lint-free cloths, and sometimes even old clothes work well too. In which case they need to be ones that haven’t been used for cleaning previously.

Where possible, use oil and wax that is specifically designed for your type of wooden furniture. This will be much safer than risking using any harsh chemical cleaning products on your beautiful woodwork. When purchasing the oil or wax you should be able to check if it is compatible with your type of wood and the finish it has been given.

Depending on the type of wood and finish, the oil should be left to soak for around 15 minutes and wax shouldn’t be left for more than 20 minutes. You should remove any excess wax with a clean pad or cloth and buff the wood until the surface is smooth to touch. Our best piece of advice is to leave the furniture for at least 24 hours to set before you use it again. This will ensure that the treatment has set properly and will look as good as new.

Should you ever be in doubt about which oil or wax is right for your furniture, then simply ask a professional. We would be happy to help confirm this for you. Just like you, we want your bespoke furniture to remain as immaculate as the day you first got it.
